Key Concepts:
Pisces is often called the most misunderstood sign of the Zodiac because it embodies a great Esoteric Truth hidden within its symbology of two semi-circles united by a straight line … one of these arcs represents the finite consciousness of a human being; the other represents the infinite consciousness of the Universe, or what is called cosmic consciousness. The line connecting them represents where these two meet: on the Earth, where the spiritual and material worlds converge. This signifies the inherent dualism of the Fish: where the urge to unite with the invisible forces of the Soul struggles with the desire to enter and control its presence in the human body.
In another aspect, one fish represents the physical body with its limitations and mortality, while the other fish represents the astral body and its world ~ the astral realm, which is the plane of emotions, urges, and the subconscious. The glyph also represents the two feet tied together, symbolizing limitations, the paying of one’s dues, Karma, to the Earth. The feet are constantly in contact with the Earth and absorb its vibrations. Because Pisceans are supersensitive receivers, they are acutely aware of the total spectrum of the human condition. This is to say it is not a mental understanding, but an emotional one, making Pisces people greatly empathetic and often compassionate.
Here is one of Pisces’ greatest internal battles: where the human personality must sacrifice its desires for the sake of others … the fish that is swimming toward Aquarius … while simultaneously exercising complete control over those around them to fulfill personal goals … the fish swimming toward Aries. The Pisces individual must resolve these conflicting aspects through the role they play in the world.
As the 12th and last sign of the Zodiac, Pisces represents the energies of conflicting desires and emotions which pull a Piscean first in one direction and then the other. This energy is slippery, watery in nature … mutable … making it a challenge to learn how to stabilize the energy. In order to balance their lives with giving and taking, a person born under this influence has the ability to go with the flow. The Piscean has the power to see the depths of human emotion and desire … compassion and understanding make the Pisces individual a sensitive and caring friend.
Pisces is the link to the Spirit world … these individuals are receptive to the unseen energies of unity, compassion and selflessness. In terms of history, Christianity is the most thorough representative of the energies of Pisces. Jesus Christ performed miracles which illustrated the magic of our connection to Spirit and were a symbol of the power of Blessings and Gratitude, (thus “feeding” the multitudes the energies of Pisces, “the fish,” along with the “bread of life”), while John the Baptist represented the Water Bearer of Aquarius, which symbolized the link between humans and the universal consciousness of the Father.
Ancient astrologers call Pisces the Sign of “Sorrow from Self Undoing” … the Piscean often falls prey to over indulgences and poor choices in companions … addictions and the tendency to run away from one’s problems are some challenges that Pisces’ energies can create … Pisces absorbs and filters the energies around it, making the Pisces individual a psychic sponge … they know exactly how you feel because they feel it, too.
Jesus walking upon water was likewise a symbol for His mastery of his emotions, fears, and superstitions. Without emotional mastery, no one can resist seeking personal fulfillment of desires and therefore are not truly capable of acting unselfishly. Most people need more than faith to believe in the invisible Spirit. This set the stage for the two miracles with 7 loaves of bread, (a symbol of Virgo and of the 7 Rays), and two fish, (a symbol for Pisces), which Jesus then looked upward to heaven, Blessing them, and broke them into pieces enough to feed the multitude gathered there, with leftovers.
The bathing of Jesus’ feet is another representation of Piscean energies and was a sign of humility, which Jesus demonstrated in turn by washing the feet of His disciples. Because His disciples were described as “fishers of men,” the symbol for Christianity is a fish. With His crucifixion and resurrection, He demonstrated the immortality of one’s Soul/Spirit. The crucifixion taking place on a Friday resulted in Catholics foregoing meat on this day, instead eating fish, a “sacrifice” in the name of Christ.
On the spiritual level, Pisces is the born medium, clairvoyant, monk, nun, or priest. The more highly evolved Piscean has an inner understanding of the mystic and is often called to the religious life. Pisceans need to feel as if they can follow their flow regardless of the outer circumstances which may inhibit this behavior, as a result they often seek alcohol or drugs, self-destructive behaviors through which they find a freedom often denied them in the material world.
Planets in Pisces tend to become highly sensitized to emotion and feelings and the ability to discriminate is weakened … Venus placed in Pisces could demonstrate as selfless loving but may also attract an unsuitable mate … Mercury could have heightened imagination and emotional dramas added to the thought processes.
