Core Meaning: “I Choose”
Key Phrase: “My need to cooperate with others and to create beauty, balance and harmony” Or “I identify myself through what I unite.”
Key Concepts:
In ancient times Libra was initially called the Yoke or the Beam, i.e., that which joins or connects. Greek and Roman mythology gives little attention to Libra and its constellation, seeing it as the chariot which bore Persephone to Hades, where Persephone represented the Virgin or Virgo, (the 6th sign), and Hades was another name for Pluto, (the 8th sign). So Libra, as the 7th sign was the liaison between individuals, especially lovers.
Libra is the Zodiacal Sign of partnerships … Relationships and partnerships are a strong drive in Libra, so strong in fact, that in Libra you feel as if there is something missing inside and this causes a longing for love and approval … these urges are so strong that a Libran will go out of their way to create a relationship in order to fulfill this longing … this energy is meant to bring home the meaning of balance within a relationship because Libra needs to learn to focus on the partner’s needs along with their own. Born under the sign of the Scales there is a striving for balance and harmony within the environment.
Librans can make great team players once the focus becomes other directed and less focused on the self … peace is worth any price to a Libran, so these people go out of their way to avoid friction and argument … Libra considers all sides to an issue or problem … fence sitting or vacillation is a common trait in this sign, so these energies appear to be indecisive to others, while Libra stubbornly sticks to trying to be fair.
Libra also includes the fall equinox, another form of balance between day and night. However, this soon gives way to longer nights and colder days, signaling a time for humans to cease their outward labors and travels. Now is the time to turn inward to perfect their art forms, skills and trades, and to journey within.
Those born under the sign of Libra are often attractive, graceful and flirtatious … always eager to test their power to draw the attention of the opposite sex. They are often flighty and, if cornered, they will simply disappear from their involvements. Libras do not like unpleasantness, assiduously avoiding them whenever possible. They love beautiful objects and like Leo, they are very fond of clothing, trinkets and beautiful objects.
Librans often suffer from a lack of realistic perception, especially of their beloved. This is frequently caused by projecting their own other, inner half onto their partner. They instinctively realize that neither man nor woman can grow personally and spiritually without blending the two halves into a unified whole. To be successful in marriage, they must be willing to blend their essence with the other, complementing one another.
Planets in Libra show the social aspect of this sign … the desire to get along with others as well as a desire for beauty and style … Venus and the other luminaries show the light and easy side of Libra’s energies … Mars is a notable exception … utilizing inaction and bouts of open hostility. The Scales symbolize Libra’s challenge to find a balance between the “self” and the “not self” … between personal desires and the needs of the greater whole.
